Enrollment is the process by which an employee is added to an insurance benefits plan. Employees can
enroll during open enrollment and choose their coverage just before the beginning of the benefit period.
- Employees can enroll outside of the open enrollment period if they experience a qualifying life event.
How it works
- Example 1: Chris' employer offers dental benefits. At the start of open enrollment Chris chooses dental coverage. The coverage will take effect at the start of the upcoming benefit period.
- Example 2: Chris is not currently enrolled in dental benefits. Midway through the benefit period, Chris gets married.
- This is considered a qualifying life event. Chris and their spouse are able to enroll in dental benefits coverage without waiting for the next open enrollment period.
